Working Capital for Contractors With Signed Jobs

By Don McClain | Fasty Funding

A signed job can create an immediate need for cash. Contractors often pay for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors before the next progress payment arrives. When several jobs overlap, the business can be growing while available cash gets tighter.

The useful starting point is a short cash forecast. List what must be paid over the coming weeks, when customer payments are expected, and what happens if an invoice or project milestone is delayed. Include overhead, taxes, insurance, and existing debt payments. A contract supports the revenue outlook, but it does not pay this week’s payroll.

Financing should match the length and size of that gap. Money used to purchase materials for a job has a different repayment path from money used to add permanent capacity. The owner should compare the payment schedule and total cost with the cash the work is expected to produce. A fast decision helps only if the resulting payments fit the business’s operating cycle.

Clear records make the request easier to evaluate. Recent bank activity, current receivables and payables, job costs, existing obligations, and the intended use of proceeds help show what the business needs and how it plans to repay it.

At Fasty Funding, we consider cash flow, credit, and collateral alongside the purpose and timing of the request. The aim is a workable funding structure that supports the business while it completes profitable work.

Construction financing for a property and working capital for the businesses building it are related but separate needs. Don McClain discusses the project side in his article on construction and development finance. Both subjects are part of the broader capital strategy he is developing in his forthcoming book, Funded.
